CHENNAI: Residents of North Chennai areas like Mannady, Royapuram and Parrys are hassled due to potholed and slushy roads following the recent rain.
Bunder Street in Parrys, the streets along Wall Tax Road near Mannady and Ramanujam Street in Washermenpet have been battered.
S Ravi of Parrys said the Bunder Street opposite to Flower Bazaar in Parrys is damaged. "The garbage thrown by fruit vendors get mixed with the slush," the resident said.
Similar is the situation in Wall Tax Road and nearby streets where the highways department was constructing storm water drains last year. "Many of these roads are yet to be re-laid. It is taxing to come out of our streets and enter the Wall Tax Road due to the slush," said Sripal Jain of Sowcarpet.
Zonal officer for Royapuram zone G Tamilselvan said they continuously keep removing the vendors in Bunder Street and other interior roads of Parrys. "They throw garbage in the night, and we keep removing them in the morning. We have also fined them. The slush will be removed soon," he said.
Tamilselvan said the corporation is estimated to relay 207 roads in Royapuram zone, that covers Mannady, Parrys, Royapuram, Harbour, Egmore and Mint.

R Ramesh, a civic activist, said the Ramanujam Street of Old Washermenpet has been battered since 2022 ever since the corporation dug it up of storm water drains. "Despite complaints in the Namma Chennai app, there is no response," he said.
To address this issue, city corporation commissioner Dr J Radhakrishnan has recently formed ward level multi-department committees to take stock of ongoing works.
He has said roads where no works are ongoing will be fixed on priority basis.
