Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has sanctioned a sum of ₹2.49 crore from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for the reconstruction of Bahanaga High School in Balasore. This decision comes after the school premises were temporarily utilised as a makeshift morgue in the aftermath of a tragic train accident that occurred on June 2.
The official statement from the Chief Minister's office confirms that the transformation of Bahanga High School is part of the 5T initiative.
An official statement from the CM office said.“Bahanga High School in Balasore district will be transformed under 5T initiative, for this, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has sanctioned 2.49 crores rupees from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund."
The state government has decided to renovate the school building under its 5T school transformation programme.
In line with this objective, Secretary VK Pandian, responsible for the 5T Transformational initiative, conducted an extensive consultation session with the school's students, teachers, public representatives, the school management committee, and the District Collector. The discussions were held on the instructions of the Chief Minister.
The decision for the transformation of the school under 5T and its conversion into a model school (Adarsha school) was approved by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on June 9.
The chief minister had asked Balasore collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde to submit a detailed project report in this regard to the chief minister's office (CMO) within 15 days, reported ANI
The Bahanaga High School accommodated bodies in six classrooms following the tragic incident of a triple train accident on June 2 involving the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express, the Howrah-bound Shalimar Express and a goods train, which claimed the lives of 288 people, reported ANI.
The incident occurred in close proximity to the school, leading to apprehension among the students and their families.
Following the reluctance of students to return to the school premises, the process of demolishing the building commenced on June 9. The demolition took place in the presence of the school managing committee.
Prior to the demolition, the district collector had made it clear that the building would be brought down if the school managing committee submitted a resolution in favour of it. Consequently, the committee fulfilled this requirement by submitting the resolution.
