Former Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard had been the favourite to take the role as recently as yesterday but his odds have drifted overnight from 6/4 to 5/1.

The news of Darren Moore's departure as manager of Sheffield Wednesday surprised many people following their thrilling play-off success last season.

The Owls, under Moore, overturned a 4-0 first leg deficit against Peterborough in the semi finals of penalties, before defeating South Yorkshire rivals Barnsley in the final via a 123rd minute winner in extra time.

Sheffield Wednesday will be back in the Championship next season after two seasons in League One, and are on the hunt for a new manager following Moore's departure by mutual consent.

Paul Ince was appointed as manager of Reading towards the back end of the 2021-22 initially, in a caretaker role, but took the job on full time last summer after surviving relegation despite being hit with a 6 point deduction.

Keeping them in the Championship for another season, with another 6 point deduction, proved one step too far though as Ince's Royals side fell into the third tier of English football for the first time since 2002.

The former England international also has experience of managing in the Premier League, having taken charge of Blackburn for the first half of the 2008-09 season.

  • Vitor Campelos - 8/1

Second on the last is the former Southampton manager Nathan Jones, whose odds have fallen from 8/1 to 11/4 overnight.

The Welshman struggled at the Saints last season, only lasting 14 matches before being given his marching orders in February this year, but the 50-year-old has enjoyed great success in the Championship before.

Jones managed Luton over two spells, initially guiding the Hatters from League Two to League One and leaving the club second in the table in January to take over as Stoke manager.

He then returned to Kenilworth at the end of the following season, taking Luton to the Championship play-off semi finals in his second season back and winning the division's manager of the season award.

Liverpool legend Gerrard's odds for taking over at Hillsborough have dropped to 5/1 overnight.

Gerrard has been without a managerial job since he was sacked as manager of Aston Villa in October last year, and rumours suggest he could be tempted by the Hillsborough job.

The 43-year-old enjoyed success in his first managerial role at Rangers, delivering the club their first league title 10 years when he lifted the trophy in 2021.

Former Benfica manager and Primeira Liga winner Bruno Lage is also in the conversation, with the Portuguese's odds dipping slightly from 6/1 to 5/1.

The 47-year-old has been without a job since receiving his marching orders from Wolves back in October last year.

Lage's compatriot Vitor Campelos is also on the shortlist at 8/1 to take over at Hillsborough, though he was as short as 5/2 yesterday.

The 48-year-old has recently left his role as manager of Portuguese side Chaves, with whom he achieved promotion to the top flight in his first full season and then guided the club to a 7th place finish in their first season back in the Primeira Liga.

Former Owls manager Carlos Carvalhal has drifted from 2/1 to 12/1, the man who took the club to within a penalty shootout of the Premier League back in 2017.

The Portuguese took the club to two Championship play-off finals in three years, and even had a stint in the Premier League as manager of Swansea for the second half of the 2017-18 season.

The 57-year-old most recently managed in La Liga as the boss of Celta Vigo, taking over in November last year with the club locked in a relegation battle, before securing a 13th place finish with a win over champions Barcelona on the final day of the season.

Current Darmstadt manager Torsten Lieberknecht is also in the running at 12/1.

Lieberknecht has just earned promotion to the Bundesliga with the German side in his second season in charge of the club.
