KHARAGPUR: A 22-year-old chemistry intern died under mysterious circumstances at IIT Kharagpur after falling sick in the early hours of Thursday. He died after being taken to BC Roy Technology Hospital on the IIT premises.
Suriya Deepan GS, a scholar from Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) Thiruvananthapuram, had come to the institute on a 2-month internship programme less than three weeks ago. He was assigned room 308 of RK Hall with two other interns, where he allegedly fell sick. He was rushed to the hospital at 2.20am where an ECG was conducted before the attending doctor declared him dead. Hospital authorities called local cops at 4.18am.
His family from Tiruppur in Tamil Nadu were informed by the institute authorities and Kharagpur police. Cops have started an unnatural death case and a video-recorded autopsy will be conducted on Friday. "The post mortem examination will be conducted at Midnapore Medical College and the process will be video-graphed," said Dhritiman Sarkar, SP of West Midnapore Police.
Tamal Nath, IIT Kharagpur registrar, said: "It's an unfortunate death and we have given all details to cops. He had come for summer training and internship 20 days ago from IISER Thiruvananthapuram."
Police said Deepan was sharing the room with two other interns who claimed they woke up around 1.30am and found him groaning.
Deepan had graduated with a BSC degree in chemistry from Bharathiar University at Coimbatore in 2022 and was pursuing an MSC in chemistry from IISER Thiruvananthapuram.
Meanwhile, the team, formed by HC to probe the death of Faizan Ahmed, was at the institute on Thursday. It inspected room C 205, where his body was found, and sealed it.
