MEERUT: A dreaded criminal, in his mid-30s, died after allegedly jumping off the flyover in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh in order to evade arrest after police surrounded him.
The man, identified as Nazim Khan alias Kallu, a native of Etah district, was an active member of a gang registered as "D-27" with Aligarh police.
SSP Bulandshahr, Shlok Kumar, told TOI on Friday, "This gang used to rob homes and would sexually assault the woman during the robbery bid. During police investigation, it has been found that the gang's kingpin is Babloo Mewati. Dozens of criminal cases are registered against them. Nazim was an active member of the gang and had 14 cases of dacoity, attempt to murder against him."
Kumar added: “In one of these cases, Nazim and three-four of his gang members took turns to rape a woman in front of her family during the robbery bid, in Aligarh district in 2012. He was out on bail in that case but still kept on threatening the family to rape their minor girl if the case was not withdrawn." A senior cop with Aligarh police told TOI that Nazim and his gang sexually assaulted several women during the robbery. “Due to family honour, most of the families remained quiet about the assaults on women," he said.
Nazim was on the run along with 10 other gang members after robbing a warehouse and fleeing with nearly 10 quintals of electric wire and other appliances, in Hapur on Wednesday night.
Following the incident, police laid a trap and arrested three of the members -- Mohd Imran, Mohd Nabeel and Mohd Bajruddin, all residents of Loni in Ghaziabad. However, the rest of them escaped and the police later intercepted their car, a motorcycle and a Mahindra pick-up on the Maukheda flyover in Bulandshahr, SSP Kumar said.
"To evade arrest, Nazim jumped from the flyover and succumbed during treatment after he was taken to the district hospital early on Wednesday. The body has been handed over to his family after a post-mortem on Thursday. Further investigation is underway," he added.
