Mysuru: Former Union minister and MP DV Sadanandagowda on Thursday defended the Union government's decision to deny rice sought by the state government for implementation of the Anna Bhagya scheme.
Speaking to reporters at Chamarajanagar, he said that the Union government has discontinued the OMSSD scheme of providing rice and wheat at subsidised rate of Rs 36.60 per kg to all the states as it wanted to stock rice to use it when rice is scarce. “The Centre is distributing 5kg of rice to over 80 crore BPL beneficiaries through the Public Distribution System under National Food Security Act,” he stated.
He criticised the state government for blaming the Centre for the denial of rice without making advance preparations and announced in a hurry to implement the Anna Bhagya scheme from July 1 without stocking required rice for distribution.
He also said, “The party will announce the new leader of opposition by July 3 before the start of the assembly session.”
