Missing submarine Titan's pilot

Wendy Rush, who is the wife of the missing Titanic tourist submarine pilot, is reportedly a descendant of the US couple who died when the gigantic ship sank in the Atlantic Ocean in 1912. The US couple have been immortalised in James Cameron’s Hollywood movie ‘Titanic’. Reports claim that Wendy Rush is the great-great-granddaughter of retailing magnate Isidor Straus and his wife, Ida. The US couple were traveling as first-class passengers on the Titanic when it hit an iceberg and sank in April 1912.

Wendy Rush married Stockton Rush in 1986. Stockton Rush is the CEO of OceanGate, the company which operates the Titanic tourist submersible that lost contact on June 18 and caught global attention. Mr Rush was also piloting Titan, the submersible that was taking tourists to the Titanic and has now lost contact.

According to reports, Stockton Rush is among the five people who are on the missing submarine with rescuers racing against time to find the vessel by strengthening their search within just hours of oxygen support remaining. According to Wendy Rush’s LinkedIn Profile, she is the OceanGate communication director and has taken part in the company’s three expeditions to the Titanic.

As far as archival records are concerned, Isidor Straus did not take a seat on a lifeboat as a large number of women and children were still aboard the Titanic which was sinking after hitting an iceberg. Isidor was joined by his wife and remained together, standing arm in arm till the ship completely sank. While Straus’s remains were found at sea several weeks after Titanic’s sinking, his wife Ida’s body was never found.

Submarine Titan, which commenced its journey to the Titanic wreck site, located at a depth of 12,500 feet in the Atlantic Ocean, lost contact after nearly two hours on Sunday. The submarine is equipped with a four-day emergency oxygen support. On Wednesday, rescuers hurried more ships and vessels to the area where Titan disappeared, hoping underwater sounds they detected for a second straight day might help narrow their search in an increasingly urgent mission.

In order to strengthen intercultural ties, the US will open two new consulates in Bengaluru and Ahmedabad, and India will open a mission in Seattle, a senior White House official announced today.

1,25,000 visas for Indian students were issued by the US in 2017—a record, according to the official. With a 20% growth in enrollment just last year, the top administration official predicted that Indian students will soon overtake Chinese students as the country’s largest foreign student population.

The US plans to establish new consulates in Ahmedabad and Bengaluru. The inauguration of India’s consulate in Seattle in 2023 is also welcomed, and the country looks forward to announcing the opening of a new consulate in the United States, the official said.

Later this year, the US Department of State will begin a trial programme to decide domestic renewals of some petition-based temporary work visas, including those for Indian nationals, with the intention of expanding the pool for whom this programme would be used, the official added.

In addition to its embassy in Washington, India has five consulates in the US, located in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta.

One of the biggest US diplomatic posts worldwide is the embassy in New Delhi. According to the information on its website, the embassy manages the activities of four consulates, located in Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, and Hyderabad, to ensure that the US-India connection remains robust throughout the nation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Joe Biden are establishing new collaborations in the defense, semiconductor manufacturing, and other sectors to commemorate the state visit of the Indian leader on Thursday. The leaders want to improve their nations’ essential, if complex, relationships.

The Democratic president’s decision to bestow such a high honour on a leader whose nine-year tenure over the largest democracy in the world has been marked by a decline in political, religious, and press freedoms is being questioned by human rights groups and some U.S. politicians as Biden honours Modi.
