JABALPUR: Twenty-two tribals in Waraseoni, a town in MP's Balaghat district, were bewildered when officers from the Mumbai cybercrime unit landed at their doorstep to find out how transactions of Rs 80 crore were carried out from their accounts.
The daily wagers are in shock, pleading that they don't even know how many zeroes make a crore. Police suspect their IDs were used to open fake accounts in their name to channelize money from crime.
All the accounts are with a private bank in Waraseoni, around 460km from Bhopal and close to the Maharashtra border.
A few days ago, a police team from Mumbai arrived in town to investigate a string of cybercrimes carried out there. They questioned a few local youths who were left stunned when told that crores have passed through accounts opened in their name.
It turned out that Delhi Police had sent notices to five people of Budbuda village, around 20km from Waraseoni town, and sought details regarding transactions worth crores in 'their accounts', said sources.
The account holders say they had no clue about the accounts in their name and some of them have since complained to local police. News of the fraud triggered alarm and many locals contacted police. Locals have alleged that two agents had taken documents from them to open bank accounts but later claimed that the accounts couldn't be opened, said sources.
Waraseoni subdivisional police officer Arvind Shrivastav said, "Around 4-5 people have complained. We are yet to reach any conclusion. Detailed investigations are on. Appropriate legal action will be taken."
