THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The cyber police have registered a case against an unidentified man from north India for cheating a person of Rs 4 lakh by impersonating as an IPS officer and also for threatening him that a criminal case has been registered against him.
Sivasubramanian Edison, 77, from Pattom received an email on June 2 stating that a ‘criminal sex offence case’ has been registered against him. But Edison ignored the mail initially, and later he received another mail with a forged video of him. The accused threatened him of maligning his image by circulating the video.
Hours later a person who introduced himself as an IPS officer named Ajay Kashyap sent an email asking him to pay a fine of $3,650 to avoid legal complications. A panicked Edison paid Rs 3,99,788 to an SBI bank account of the accused at Dakshin Barasat in West Bengal. Even after making the payment, the accused continued to demand more money from him. Soon he contacted his friend and explained the entire story and on the advice of his friend, he filed a case.
The cyber police have started investigation after registering a case under sections of IPC 419 for cheating by personation, 420 for cheating, 468 forgery for the purpose of cheating and 471 for fraudulent use of forged documents and also under section 66 (D) of the Information Technology Act-2000.
“The bank account, to which the amount was transferred, must be a fake one. The probe has just begun, and we are trying to locate the accused,” police said.
