Caterham Project V to be revealed 12 July

Caterham has given us a new look at its upcoming Project V - an electric sports car that marks a radical departure from the British brand’s line up of traditional Seven models. 

The shadowy teaser shot shows the car’s front end, with a LED side lights and a swoopy bonnet with what looks like a clamshell design. We’ve also seen the car from the side, the image depicting a two-door coupe with a rounded profile and pronounced wheel arches with old-school proportions reminiscent of a Ferrari Dino 206’s.

The Project V has been created by Chief Designer, Anthony Jannarelly, a name you may recognise from his retro Design-1 sports car. Caterham has partnered with Italdesign and the show car is being manufactured at the Italian firm’s Turin headquarters. 

As part of the launch of the all-electric EV Seven in May, Caterham CEO Bob Laishley said: “Any future EV model we produce must be true to the DNA of a Caterham: lightweight, fun-to-drive and driver focused.

Rivals for Caterham’s new creation will be few and far between. The future of Alpine’s all-electric sports car (previewed by the E-ternite concept) was placed in doubt after it announced it wouldn’t be working with Lotus after all and we’re still a few years off seeing the Porsche Cayman and Boxster EV hit showrooms. 

If Caterham’s EV Seven is anything to go by, the Project V will be one of the lightest electric sports cars on sale. However, we’re not sure if it’ll receive the EV Seven’s 240bhp electric motor or 40kWh usable battery which were sourced from the team at Swindon Powertrain Ltd.

Caterham says the Project V will be unveiled at Goodwood Festival of Speed.
