Convert Thoppur ghat section of NH into six-way lane: PMK
Salem: Three Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) MLAs met union minister for road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari in New Delhi on Tuesday and urged him to convert the Thoppur ghat section of the Salem-Bengaluru national highway into a six-lane road.
R Arul (Salem west), S Sadhasivam (Mettur) and S P Venkateswaran (Dharmapuri) met the union minister. Talking to TOI over phone, Arul said the MLAs had gone to Delhi to meet the union minister on the direction of PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss. “We explained the importance of making the Thoppur ghat section which is a four-way lane into a six-way lane, to the minister,” he said. He added the Thoppur ghat section has been called the ‘death trap’ as 244 people have died in accidents on this stretch, over a decade.
The MLAs have also urged the union minister to construct two bridges to regulate traffic congestion at Seelanaickenpatty and Mamangam in Salem. “The union minister heard all our demands patiently and assured us that he will look into them at the earliest,” Arul said.
