Women power on display

Berhampur: The chariot of Devi Subhadra was pulled by women at Gosaninuagaon here and in Paralakhemundi in Gajapati district during Rath Yatra on Tuesday.
The chariots of Lord Jagannath and Lord Balabhadra were pulled by men in both places. Berhampur, Paralakhemundi and Baripada are three places where Rath Yatra is conducted in a similar way.
Pulling of Devi Subhadra’s chariot by women in Baripada was started in 1975, while it commenced in the Jagannath Temple in Gosaninuagaon here from 2000, taking a cue from Baripada, said the organisers. In Paralakhemundi, however, it was started from 2019. tnn
