Notwithstanding the deficient rainfall, water level in the reservoir of the Opa water treatment plant has improved since the past two weeks due to rain showers in the catchment areas of the Khandepar and Dudhsagar rivers, informed WRD officials.

As per information, the water level at the Opa plant, which had dipped to 3.12 metres on May 30, has increased to 5 metres and if the state receives some showers, the barrage will overflow, officials said. Considering it, PWD has continued its full supply of 143 MLD of water to the Ponda, Tiswadi and part of Dharbandora and Shiroda (around 4 MLD after the Mhaisal dam dried out).

According to WRD officials, the rain showers in the state’s Western Ghats area and part of Karnataka have rejuvenated the Dudhsagar and Khandepar rivers, which have helped improve water level in Opa plant.

The Opa water treatment plant is the main water source for the Tiswadi and Ponda talukas and part of Dharbandora and Shiroda.

For the smooth pumping of the required 143 MLD water every day, water level at Opa reservoir needs to be maintained above 2.50 metres and responsibility of the same is with the WRD.

However, some residents of hilly areas in Shiroda and Borim are complaining about water shortage.
