Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US First Lady Jill Biden will visit the National Science Foundation today where they would interact with Indian and American students, the White House has said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. He will celebrate the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations Headquarters with the UN leadership and members of the international community.
A visit to the National Science Foundation in Alexandria, Virginia is likely to be the first public engagement of the prime minister, which would be hosted by the First Lady, the White House said on Tuesday.
The official State visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US showcases the strength and resilience of the India-US partnership, according to an official from the previous Trump administration.
Lisa Curtis, senior fellow and director of the Indo-Pacific Security Programme at the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) think-tank, said on Tuesday that the visit also underscores the importance that the Biden administration attaches to New Delhi's role in challenging China's rise in the region.
"Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the White House this week will showcase the strength and resilience of the US-India partnership and the importance the Biden administration attaches to India's role in challenging China's rise in the region," she said.
Prime Minister Modi is in New York on the first leg of his maiden state visit to the US at the invitation of President Joe Biden.
Prime Minister Modi and Prof. Romer held discussions on India's digital journey, including the use of Aadhar and innovative tools like Digilocker. They also discussed various initiatives being undertaken by India for urban development.
"Glad to have met noted economist and Nobel laureate, Professor @paulmromer. We had extensive conversations on leveraging technology to improve lives. We also talked about how to make our cities more sustainable and people friendly," PM Modi tweeted after the meeting.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead a unique yoga session at the UN Headquarters here on Wednesday in a historic celebration to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga that will see the participation from top UN officials, envoys from across the world and prominent individuals.
In a video message on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga, Prime Minister Modi said India has always nurtured traditions that unite, adopt and embrace and made a fervent appeal to eliminate contradictions, hurdles and resistances through yoga.
