KANPUR: A 17-year-old boy allegedly strangled a 14-year-old after the latter castles his stumps in a cricket match in Kanpur on Monday evening. The victim reportedly died on the pitch of an open playground in Rahti Dera village of Ghatampur area of the district. The accused and his brother, who reportedly assisted him, are on the run.
According to reports, the accused got upset and refused to leave the pitch after the victim clean-bowled him. It led to a verbal duel between the two. The matter escalated when the accused called his brother and both started beating the victim. After a severe assault, the two pinned the victim to the ground and strangled him, say police.
When other boys present on the ground informed the victim's family about the incident, they reached the ground and rushed him to the Ghatampur hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
The family later returned home with the body. On getting information, local kotwali in charge Vikram Singh reached the village with force and tried to take possession of the body for postmortem.
The victim's family members, however, resisted and created a ruckus, demanding the district magistrate or senior police official to be called to the spot. They refused to perform the last rites until the accused was arrested.
After being persuaded by the police for about four hours, the family members agreed for autopsy and later filed a complaint at the Ghatampur Kotwali police station against the accused.
Ghatampur ACP Dinesh Shukla said, "An FIR has been lodged under relevant IPC sections in this case. Raids are underway to detain the accused and his brother involved in the crime."

The victim has two brothers and four sisters. His father is a small-time farmer. The villagers said that his aunt was beaten to death by the accused's family three years ago.
