‘Basic concepts need to improve for increasing success rate’
Bhubaneswar: Following the dismal performance of the state’s students in JEE (Advanced), the results of which were announced on Sunday, several experts here feel that basic concepts and communication skills of the students need to be strengthened, especially at the intermediate and college level to increase their success rates in national level exams.
They have urged the state government to introduce facilities at the intermediate and college level which can help the students develop such skills.
“As expected, the Odia students have not done well in JEE (Advanced) and it is mainly because their grasp on fundamental concepts is weak. Without an understanding of basic concepts, it is difficult to crack JEE (Advanced) where the questions are mostly application-oriented,” R N Panda, former principal of BJB (Autonomous) College, said. He added that in coaching centres, the students are taught to solve multiple choice questions but they were not made aware about the fundamentals. “In college, students don’t get such an opportunity due to lack of proper faculty and insufficient time to finish the syllabus.
Surya Narayan Mishra, the former head of the department of political science at Utkal University, is also of the same opinion.
