Manipur violence

The Manipur High Court on Tuesday has directed the state government to facilitate limited internet services in some designated areas. The internet service in the northeastern state was banned since May 3, when the violence between the ethnic communities erupted.

The bench remarked that the internet is necessary for people of the state to carry out urgent and essential work, particularly in regards to the ongoing admission process of students. According to reports, the order was issued by Justices Ahanthem Bimol Singh & A Guneshwar Sharma while hearing a bunch of Public Interest Litigation seeking restoration of internet services in the crisis-hit state.

Internet ban in the state has been continuing for over a month in the view of violence that erupted after clashes between the Kukis and the Meities. The clash between both the communities broke out following a high court direction to consider granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meities.

The High Court has also directed the telecom service provider to register affidavits deliberating on the feasibility of providing limited internet access to the public by blocking social media websites in an attempt to safeguard the state government’s concern for maintaining law and order.

According to reports, the bench had scheduled the next date of consideration for these cases on June 23. Meanwhile, the parties involved have been granted the liberty to exchange their affidavits as they see fit.

The ongoing violence has claimed the lives of nearly 100 people in the state. Clashes first broke out in Manipur on May 3 following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’, which was organised in the hill district to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. As far as reports are concerned, Meiteis comprise about 53 per cent of the state’s population and they reside mostly in the Imphal valley. Tribals namely Nagas and Kukis constitute around 40 per cent of the population and they reside in the hill districts.

The government of India has finally in a major humane upgrade for the truck drivers in India has directed for mandatory air conditioned cabins inside trucks starting 2025.

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari while addressing an event announced the decision.

The decision comes as a significant move giving respite to the drivers who drive for 10-12 hours a day and travel for days to reach to their destination without caring about the weather conditions and have to reel under extreme temperatures at some or other point.

The government has given a transition period of 18 months to the industry to make the necessary upgrades.

Gadkari said, in India some drivers drive for 12-14 hours unlike other countries, where they have a restriction on the number of hours for bus and truck drivers. He said, the drivers face 43-47 degree Celsius temperature while operating and their condition must be taken imagined and taken into consideration.

Gadkari said he wanted to solve this issue since he took oath as the Minister.

The step taken is also expected to reduce accidents as in many cases, the reason behind the accidents are driver falling asleep as they do not get proper rest and get fatigue.

While brands like Volvo and Scania provide an AC in their high-end trucks, a majority portion of trucks running in the country do not have this facility.

The decision comes just days after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s truck rides in India and the USA.

Gandhi in May took a truck ride from Delhi to Chandigarh and during his recent visit to the US, he took a ride from Washington DC to New York.

During these rides Gandhi discussed the problems the truck drivers have to face in India, while they are away from home for days, weeks and sometimes months. Despite the weather conditions, they have to fulfill their duty to transport the logistics and essential items from one location to another.
