ULHASNAGAR: Around 5,000 traders from 15 traders associations operating in Ulhasnagar's 5 number area have decided to call bandh on June 23 demanding permanent closure of the dumping ground from the area.
Traders claimed that for seven years, they have been urging all party leaders for closure of the dumping ground and shifting it to the proposed site but the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) in Maharashtra's Thane district failed to do it.
Gopi Wadhwani, president of Ulhasnagar Garment Manufacturing Association (UGMA), said, “Seven years ago UMC started this dumping ground saying it will be temporary for 15 days but later they did not close it and day by day, it has become problematic for all citizens as well as traders living in 5 number area, because sometimes it becomes difficult to breathe due to its foul smell."
Wadhwani said, “Due to the menace caused by the dumping ground, we traders have appealed to the UMC as well as politicians from all parties, but no one listens. Hence all the traders have come together and decided to close entire 5 numbers area's shops to raise our voice against the administration."
Another trader Dinesh Mirchandani said, “We urge the UMC to immediately close the dumping area and it should shift it to another proposed site because not only citizens but thousands of students studying in eight schools situated in one kilometre radius are suffering due to the same."
