Hulu’s Into the Dark series has served as a powerful forum for established and up-and-coming genre directors to showcase new and exciting horror films, and while we’ve already covered Treehouse (directed by James Roday), we’d also like to shine some morbid light on director Nacho Vigalondo’s contribution to the anthology. It’s a film called Pooka! that stars Nyasha Hatendi as a man named Wilson who takes an acting job as a costumed creature named Pooka, a beast based on a popular new holiday toy that’s selling like crazy. But as the toy’s popularity reaches new heights, Wilson begins experiencing wild hallucinations with murderous conclusions. A fitting genre feast for the Christmas season, Vigalondo clearly had a ton of fun with his off-the-wall concept, and so will you.

If you like your horror films served up in bite-sized fashion, then we highly recommend The ABCs of Death. Made up of 26 genre vignettes, each from a different director and themed upon a single word (kicking off with a word that starts with “A” and ending with one that starts with “Z”), noteworthy talents like Nacho Vigalondo, Adam Wingard, and Ben Wheatley serve up some chilling tales that will burrow deep into your brain. While some shorts are better than others, as a whole, The ABCs of Death is a horror fan’s dream come true, and if you like what you see, there are two sequels out there, too!

If you’re tired of seeing the glorification of social media in traditional Hollywood films, Spree is a sardonic and gory commentary on the “influencer” world we’re all living in. The film stars Joe Keery as rideshare driver Kurt Kunkle, a man hellbent on going viral across the like-share-subscribe digital landscape. His master plan: outfit his vehicle with cameras and film the planned murders of his passengers. It’s a bonkers premise that requires some suspension of disbelief, but in its caricaturing of celebrity desperation, Spree is a magnificent tongue-in-cheek stab at the loud and unrelenting cacophony that is Instagram, TikTok, and all the other apps we know, love, and need.

XX bears the unique distinction of being a horror anthology film comprised of four tales directed by female filmmakers — specifically, Jovanka Vuckovic, Annie Clark, Roxanne Benjamin, and Karyn Kusama. With the lens dominated by an engrossing female perspective, each of the vignettes (The Box, The Birthday Party, Don’t Fall, and Her Only Living Son), zeitgeist-focused women’s issues are front and center, albeit drenched in layers of gore, grime, and a blast of dark comedy. There’s nothing quite like a solid coming-of-age story, especially when the focus is on a 12-year-old gymnast (Siiri Solalinna) named Tinja who comes into the possession of a dying bird’s one and only egg deep in the woods — one that hatches and reveals one of the most visually disturbing combinations of makeup and VFX the world has ever seen. It turns out the creature takes on the likeness of those who raise it, too, leading us down a path of surreal terrors as Tinja does everything in her power to shield her family from the monster’s clutches. There’s plenty to be said about Hatching’s vivisection of girlhood and what it takes to be worthy in the eyes of our mothers. With its David Lynch-inspired visions of idyllic suburbia getting ripped and clawed apart, this is a feature that’s hard to forget.

Enid (Niamh Algar), a film censor, protects the moviegoing public from the exploits of the “nasties” of the day. When the dutiful anti-cinephile is assigned a new disturbing film, it’s nothing but work as usual until Enid starts tracing parts of the violent picture back to a series of traumatic events that occurred in her youth — horrid acts that may have had something to do with the disappearance of her sister. An indie gem for sure, Censor may skip the radar of most Hulu-watchers of today, but we loved its performances and captivating take on the infamous phenomena that was England’s “video nasty” era.

When Tomaz (Alec Secareanu), an ex-soldier living in London, is forced to flee the dilapidated compound he shares with other refugees, a benevolent nun finds employment for him with a woman named Magda (Carla Juri). Caring for her ailing mother, Magda needs help with home repairs and upkeep. As Tomaz begins servicing the home, a series of strange events start unfolding, leading Tomaz to believe that there’s something sinister living all-too-close to him and his employers. A cerebral creeper with excellent character work and original storytelling, Amulet summons the demons we thought we banished to our pasts, placing these unforgiving monsters front-and-center.

Genre Thriller, Horror
Stars Maisie Williams, Sylvester McCoy, Rita Tushingham
Directed by Julius Berg
Adapted from the Hermann and Yves H. graphic novel Une Nuit de Pleine Lune, The Owners follows Gaz, Nathan, and Terry (Jake Curran, Ian Kenny, and Andrew Ellis), a band of wannabe thieves that has big plans to break into the local country manor of Dr. Huggins and his wife, Ellen. Hoping to secure a major cash haul from a hidden safe in the house, what the band of youths didn’t anticipate was a turning of the tables by the seemingly elderly homeowners, a couple with more bite than they let show on the surface. A gruesome but thrilling addition to the home invasion subgenre, The Owners places great emphasis on the talented ensemble cast, particularly Sylvester McCoy and Rita Tushingham as the tantalizing septuagenarians.

The best Amazon Prime original series right now
Jill Duggar and her husband sitting on a couch being interviews for Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets.

Although Amazon Prime Video trails only Netflix in subscriber count, it's still somehow not as prevalent in the cultural conversation as competitors like Netflix, Max, and Hulu. Part of that has to do with Prime Video's comparatively lackluster library of original content.

However, Prime Video has made a conscious investment in improving its original TV and movie offerings to keep pace with its competitors. In recent years, not only has Amazon made more shows, but the quality has generally improved, too. It's been nearly a decade since the premiere of its Emmy-winning debut show, Transparent, and Amazon has packed Prime Video with original shows. We keep track of all the releases worth your time in this roundup. These are the best Amazon Prime original series right now.
We’ve also rounded up the best Netflix original series and the best Hulu original series if Prime Video doesn’t have the originals you’re looking for.

Some of the "It" girls of Queenmaker, including Paris Hilton (left).

Hulu has at least one of those types of documentaries in its vast collection, which we've parsed through to find the best of the best this month.

And while you're here, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the Disney Bundle, which gets you Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN+ for just $14 a month. That's basically the same price for two of the services, only you're getting the third one gratis. Sweet.
