Downpour continues in Thiruvananthapuram as southwest monsoon picks up strength
HYDERABAD: The state is likely to keep its date with the monsoon, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting its arrival within the next 48 hours (June 21). Monsoon winds will start entering Southern Telangana, with parts of Mahbubnagar, Gadwal, Nalgonda and Suryapet receiving thundershowers on June 20 itself.
The monsoon is likely to progress and cover the entire state latest by June 26, bringing in much needed respite from the heat. There has already been a 12-day delay in rains as monsoon usually hits the state on June 10. In 2022, it arrived in the state by June 13.
While the city is already seeing overcast skies, this will not translate into monsoon-style rains owing to weak winds. “We can expect that in the next 48 hours monsoon will enter Telangana. While it is tough to say when it will co-ver the state, by June 24 to June 25, we can expect good rains to commence all across the state and other parts of the country,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president, Meteorology And Climate Change, Skymet Weather.
Presently, the monsoon has arrived in Karnataka and southern Andhra Pradesh. “The overcast weather will continue over Hyderabad until June 21. In fact, south Telangana like Mahbubangar, Nalgonda and Suryapet willsee thundershowers as well. By June 26 and 27 we can expect heavy widespread rain activity across the state,” said Sravani A, Scientist C, IMD.
Both IMD and Skymet have stated that Telangana will receive normal rainfall this year despite El-Nino kicking in and abnormal delay in Monsoon. “Southern peninsular is relatively better suited in receiving a good Monsoon spell this year as compared to other parts,” said Mahesh Palawat.
