Ullal beach turns a dump yard over segregation issue
Mangaluru: Ullal Beach, a prominent tourist destination in Mangaluru constituency represented by speaker UT Khader, has turned into a waste dump yard.
According to sources, Ullal City Municipal Council (CMC) was not able to shift dry waste to the dump yard of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) at Pachanady as MCC accepts only wet waste from other urban local bodies.
Meanwhile, the Ullal CMC found no place to dump the dry waste. Hence, the dry waste collected in Ullal city limits is being dumped on the way to the beach, causing inconvenience to tourists.
Inconvenience to people
Parisara Samrakshana Nagarikara Okkoota convener Mangaluru Riaz told TOI that the entrance of the beach has been turned into a dump yard and people visiting the beach are not able to walk through the stretch without closing their nose.
“Just because the municipality is not able to shift dry waste to Pachanady, the place near the beach has been made a garbage dump yard. Residents of Ullal have already demanded that the CMC clear the garbage heap immediately. Officials are blaming people for not segregating waste at source. People have decided to serve notice to officials seeking their immediate response,” he added.

Ullal city municipal commissioner Vani V Alva, who took charge a week ago, told TOI that the waste dump yard of MCC at Pachanady had stopped accepting dry waste nearly a year ago.
“The wet waste from the city is being shifted to Pachanady regularly. However, dry waste is not being accepted. Though the Ullal CMC had opened a dry waste collection centre, the space for it was not sufficient considering the large quantity of input. The revenue department will have to allot land for the purpose,” she said.
“A solution will be found for the issue within a week. The MLA has also promised to take necessary measures to solve the issue at the earliest. Meanwhile, the issue also will be brought to the notice of deputy commissioner Mullai Muhilan MP, who is the administrator of the CMC,” she added.
