'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. The best AT&T phone deals right now: Google Pixel 7a, Samsung Galaxy S23, iPhone 14 Pro Max, and more

AT&T customers, new and existing, can enjoy some great deals on the latest smartphones and accessories from Apple, Samsung, Google, and more.

Whether they're foldable, curved, big, or small, expensive or budget-friendly, our phones are devices we rely on probably more than any other gadget in our life.

Naturally, we're always looking for the best deal we can find for a better phone, with new processing power, storage upgrades, camera improvements, and connectivity to entice us into upgrading our devices. Alternatively, if our smartphone meets an untimely demise, we might just need an affordable handset to tide us over.

AT&T commercials emphasize that the carrier doesn't differentiate who qualifies for which deal based on whether you're an existing customer or not. The deals below apply to all customers, new and old alike, and we've broken down the fine print so you can shop with confidence. Top deals include a discounted Google Pixel 7a, Samsung Galaxy S23, and iPhone 14 Pro Max. (You can also check out the best Verizon deals, and the best phone deals.)

The best AT&T deals

Our favorite deal at AT&T is for the Google Pixel 7a. This budget-friendly handset -- generally set at an RRP of around $520 -- is available for only $2 per month, based on a contract of 36 months.

If you're shopping around for a handset that won't break the bank, the Google Pixel 7a is a great choice. The model on offer is in charcoal and comes with 128GB SSD storage.

No trade-in is required, which is always a bonus. You will, however, need to agree to the installment plan and either sign up or upgrade to an Unlimited plan with AT&T.

There's also a promotion for Samsung's Galaxy S23 at AT&T. If you're willing to trade in an older device, you can pick up the flagship smartphone for free.

AT&T does require you to hand over a suitable device for the full trade-in value. However, different devices will net you different discounts. For example, a Samsung Galaxy S20+, 128GB, in good condition equates to $800 off -- resulting in a free Galaxy S23 -- whereas older models, such as the iPhone 7, might not be eligible for this deal.

You will also need to sign up or upgrade to an Unlimited plan.

A deal for Apple fans at AT&T is for the Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max. If you're keen to get your hands on the new Apple flagship smartphone, you can save up to $1000 when you trade in an older device.

Depending on the mode, age, and condition of the device you trade, you can seriously bring down the cost of the monthly iPhone payment. At best, your installment plan can be reduced from $30.56 at a full rate to as low as $2.78 per month.

The Motorola Razr+ is a sleek, foldable smartphone and a great alternative to an Apple, Samsung, or Google device.

If you pre-order this product via AT&T on an eligible installment and Unlimited plan, you will pay the equivalent of $5 per month based on a 36-month agreement. The Motorola Razr+ comes with 256GB storage.

No trade-in is required to take advantage of this deal. If you want to be able to upgrade your device part-way through your contract, you can also choose to sign up for AT&T Next Up ($6 per month).

If you buy a Google Pixel device through the carrier, AT&T will give you 50% off a pair of Google Pixel Buds.

You can choose between Pixel Buds A-Series earbuds which usually retail for $99.99 -- bringing the cost down to around $50 -- or a pair of Pixel Buds Pro. The latter option is Google's latest attempt at noise-canceling, quality earbuds; we consider them the equivalent of Apple Airpod Pros for Android.

You would typically pay $199.99 for Pixel Buds Pro earbuds, but with AT&T's promotion, you will save around $100.

What is the best AT&T deal?

The best AT&T deal is for the Google Pixel 7a. It's not the most advanced or high-end handset available through the carrier, true, but at only $2 per month, it is a great choice if monthly budgets are a concern. No trade-in is required, which is always a bonus.

How did we choose these AT&T phone deals?

When we made our selection for the best AT&T deals, we wanted to include options based on the following criteria:

  • Value: The deal had to offer good value for money, especially regarding trade-in offers or discounts applied to new handsets, tablets, or entertainment products.
  • Affordability: The economy is facing an uncertain time, and when we experience this type of disruption, it is sometimes essential to reduce our expenses as much as possible. With this in mind, we have included products suitable for various budgets.
  • Variety: We require a diverse range of products to be available, suiting different users and their needs.
  • Free products: Devices drop in value over time, and to offload excess stock, some carriers will launch time-sensitive deals, giving subscribers free products in exchange for signing up for a new contract.

Does AT&T offer deals for existing customers?

It's true, carriers are the most aggressive with their offers when it's year-end and new customers are shopping around for services to switch to. Still, AT&T has done a fairly balanced job of pushing promotions for new and existing customers, including all the deals we have listed above. If you've been a loyal customer, we'd even recommend reaching out to your local AT&T provider to see if there are any exclusive deals just for you.

Is it cheaper to buy a phone online or in-store?

In general, there is no difference in how much money you save whether you shop online or in stores. Instead, deciding between the two really boils down to your preference for transactions. With how complicated carrier phone deals can be, you may be better off heading down to the local AT&T store and consulting with a product expert to help you navigate the fine print. Otherwise, shopping online can be faster and more convenient.
