Twitter handle of Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum blocked amid violence in Manipur
The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum is the prominent tribal leaders group in Manipur. It is reportedly heading a protest in the northeastern state against the N Biren Singh led BJP government.

The Twitter account of Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) has been blocked. The Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum is the prominent tribal leaders group in Manipur. The major tribal leader group is reportedly heading a protest in the northeastern state against the N Biren Singh led BJP government. Issuing a statement about the phenomenon, the ITLF called this a shocking act of censorship. It added that its Twitter handle has been blocked in response to a legal demand.
The statement further stated that the ITLF Media Cell Twitter account which is essential for raising awareness about Kuki-Zo tribal communities in Manipur, has been blocked in the country. The group asserted that in spite of working tirelessly towards addressing the challenges, this censorship is yet another attempt to stifle marginalized voices. In addition, it also noted that this action amounts to a violation of Article 19 of the Indian Constitution, which deliberates about the freedom of speech and expression, along with the United Nation treaty of 1948 on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In view of a series of fresh violence in the crisis-hit state, the Manipur government has extended the ongoing ban on internet services for next five days. The BJP led government had enforced the internet shutdown for the first time on May 3, when the ethnic violence between the two communities evolved in the state. As far as reports are concerned, in the recent days, mobs attempted to torch down houses of BJP leaders in Imphal. Two civilians were injured after the mobs clashed with the security forces.
The ITLF alleged that the blocking of its social media handle will lead to severely limiting and hampering the ability of the tribal communities to report from the ground about the daily attacks. The statement cited that by obstructing the ITLF media cell’s reach and dissemination of vital information, their limited effort to shed light on the ongoing ethnic cleansing committed against them have been choked.
