VISAKHAPATNAM:
Andhra Pradesh is likely to heave a sigh of relief from heatwave conditions from Monday (June 20) as the IMD-Amaravati predicted that heatwaves may witness a downfall from the next week.
While Kakinada and Narsapur towns in Andhra Pradesh witnessed severe heatwave conditions on Sunday, Machilipatnam, Gannavaram, Jangamaheswara Puram in Palnadu district, Bapatla, Tuni and Vizag city experienced heatwave conditions.
As per the IMD-Amaravati, Bapatla registered the highest temperature of 43.2 degrees Celsius in the state on Sunday, followed by Kakinada 42.1°C, Machilipatnam 42°C, Jangamaheswara Puram 42°C, Ongole 41.8°C, Tuni 41.7°C, Gannavaram 41.4°C, Visakhapatnam 41.4°C, Narsapur 41.4°C, Kavali 40.9°C, Amaravati 40.8°C, Nandigama 40.6°C and Nandyal 40°C.
Speaking to TOI, Dr S Karuna Sagar, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department in Amaravati, said that the northern limit of monsoon continues to pass through Ratnagiri, Koppal, Puttaparthi, Shriharikota, Malda and Forbesganj. The conditions are favourable for further advance of southwest monsoon over some more parts of south Peninsular India, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Bihar during the next two to three days.
Strong westerly winds and rainfall activity are required for the advancement of the monsoon. There are winds in the region but not strong enough to push them towards remaining parts of the state. Most probably, monsoon may spread to the remaining parts of the state and parts of the state will witness rainfall activity. The mercury levels in the state will dip from Wednesday and there will be no heatwave conditions, Karuna Sagar added.
The maximum temperature in Vizag (Waltair locality) on Sunday was 35.8 °C but the relative humidity oscillated 65 and 76 per cent causing much discomfort to the Vizagites. We have been experiencing sweltering weather conditions for the past one week despite the thundershowers. We are eagerly waiting for the monsoon showers to get the much-needed relief from the hot and humid weather conditions, said K Srinivasa Reddy, a resident of Beach Road locality in Vizag city.
Parts of ASR district witnessed rainfall accompanied with gusty winds on Saturday and Sunday. The rain has dipped mercury levels in the region.
