BENGALURU: In the backdrop of residents opposing the construction of a multi-sport arena under Shivananda Circle flyover, BBMP has dropped the plan. It is now constructing benches for people to relax under the flyover shade, and public toilets.
BBMP has also decided to beautify the pillars by painting themes that reflect the culture and heritage of
Karnataka. According to sources, the agency had earlier proposed to develop a basketball ground and skating rink for children under the flyover.
"We had a plan to develop a basketball ground and other sports facilities. But the public filed objections and hence, we dropped it. Now, we are only constructing benches and toilets," said BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath.
PN Ravindra, special commissioner for projects, BBMP, said Shivananda Circle flyover is located at the intersection of two busy roads. Residents expressed concern about the safety of children, who may cross the busy road to enter the play area under the flyover.
"We need to utilise the space for the public to prevent it from becoming a garbage dump. So, we are developing it for public utilities. Citizens can can sit and relax there," said Ravindra. He added they may not take up similar projects under other flyovers in view of kids' safety. Palike officials said residents of Kumara Park and
Madhavanagar were against construction of the multi-sport arena.
