CM: Goa freedom struggle will be included in Class XI history books
Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai recalled the contribution of Dr Ram Manohar Lohia and Dr Juliao Menezes to Goa’s freedom struggle and said the new generation should understand the role played by them
Panaji: Chief minister Pramod Sawant said on Sunday that the state would include the Goan freedom struggle in the Class XI history textbooks. He also promised freedom fighters that within a year, all their children would be provided with government jobs.
Speaking at the Revolution Day programme, Sawant said that the government would start a ‘gramin mitra yojana’ so that senior citizens won’t have to visit government departments for their work, which will be done at their residence.
Elaborating on his vow to include the history of the Goa freedom struggle in textbooks, Sawant said that last year, the government promised to include the Cuncolim revolt in history textbooks, and that it’s already been done. “The history of June 18 was included in Gomant Bal Bharti primary textbooks,” he said.
Sawant also assured freedom fighters that the government would clear all pending proposals including pension and employment to their children. Sawant said that there are around 100 children of freedom fighters who will be employed by the government. The state is preparing a list, he said. Sawant also said that the state government has recognised all freedom struggle movements.
Speaking on the renovated Aguada jail, Sawant said that after its restoration, tourists from across the country and abroad have started visiting the place, and the state government will preserve and maintain it.
Meanwhile, governor P S Sreedharan Pillai said that there is a need for introspection because the British gave farewell to India but Portugal was forced to quit India, and in that process “we have obtained political freedom in its full strength”.

“Introspection is needed because our democracy is known as the mother of democracy as per the Constitution. So really, we can proudly say our system is developing day by day and the Indian Constitution, Parliament, and democracy are accepted as among the finest in the world,” Pillai said. The governor said that Goa is in the top position with regards to per capita income, and that efforts are now on to make it one of the best, richest, and most affluent states in India.
