MC holds capacity-building workshop for sanitary staff
Ludhiana: To ensure improvement of solid waste management through the segregation of wet and dry waste in the city, the municipal corporation (MC) organised a one-day capacity-building workshop for garbage collectors and ragpickers in MC zone-A office, near Mata Rani chowk, on Friday.
During the workshop organised under the ‘Mera Shehar, Mera Maan’ campaign, the civic body officials explained the solid waste management rules to the waste collectors. MC zonal commissioner Neeraj Jain and corporation sanitation officer (CSO) Ashwani Sahota said the waste collectors had been asked to dump segregated waste at the secondary dump points.
Zonal commissioner Jain said the garbage collectors were also asked to apprise the MC officials about households which don’t hand over segregated waste to them so that corrective steps can be taken. The garbage collectors were asked to spread awareness among the residents about home composting of wet waste and how they can reduce the waste in their respective houses.
Jain said that civic body staff and the garbage collectors were also asked to spread awareness regarding the ban on plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items. Discussions were also held on the problems being faced by garbage collectors at ground level and the steps that can be taken to tackle the same.
Meanwhile, MC chief Shena Aggarwal appealed to the residents to support the authorities in improving solid waste management in the city. Aggarwal urged the residents to hand over segregated waste to the garbage collectors and stop using banned plastic items.
