Mangaluru: In preparation to face the monsoon, Headquarters, No.3 Coast Guard district,
Karnataka, conducted a
pollution response seminar/ workshop and mock drill or tabletop exercise on Thursday and Friday.
The programme was organised in coordination with the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA), MRPL, educational institutions, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Mangalore SEZ and other oil handling agencies.
The two-day exercise was aimed at providing the techniques to clean up oil/ HNS spill contingency planning framework, strategies and policies, including implementation of existing relevant national legislation and international treaties.
The seminar was inaugurated by deputy inspector general
Praveen Kumar Mishra, commander, Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 3 (Karnataka). In the keynote address, he highlighted the importance of stakeholders coming under one roof to prepare themselves under the theme of Prevention and Preparedness through Collaboration.
The second day of the exercise focused on demonstration of oil spill response equipment in coordination with NMPA and MRPL, and to provide first-hand knowledge to all participants to deal with oil spill disasters at sea.
All stakeholders and resource agencies participated and benefitted from the two-day seminar-cum-mock drill, staed a release, adding it enlightened the participants on innovative procedures and methods to deal with marine pollution.
