Monsoon likely to reach east India next week: Skymet

The delay in monsoon progress is largely due to the impact of the cyclonic storm Biparjoy, which has now weakened into a depression and moved over Rajasthan.

New Delhi: Private weather forecaster Skymet expects monsoon to reach south Peninsula and east India next week.

The onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala was delayed by a week and is lagging behind its usual schedule in the West Coast, South Peninsula, East India, and Central India. The delay is largely due to the impact of the cyclonic storm Biparjoy, which has now weakened into a depression and moved over Rajasthan.

According to Skymet, strong southwesterly winds over the southeast Arabian Sea will trigger active monsoon conditions over South Peninsula. This surge is expected to facilitate the further advance of monsoon in the region.

As the depression over Rajasthan dissipates, it is projected to re-emerge over central and east Uttar Pradesh as a low-pressure area, drawing monsoon currents from the Bay of Bengal. This weather shift is expected to gradually ramp up rainfall over Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal from Sunday to Wednesday.

Skymet anticipates the monsoon could reach east Uttar Pradesh by 23 June. Despite expectations of intensified rainfall in Madhya Pradesh, residents of Central India will have to wait a bit longer for the onset of the monsoon.

Although rain activities would intensify over Madhya Pradesh in the coming week, central India would have to wait for some more time for the monsoon to make its onset there, the private weather forecasting agency said.

Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department forecasts that heat wave conditions to persist in many regions of Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh for the next five days, and in Odisha and Jharkhand over the coming four days.

Similar weather patterns are also expected in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, Bihar, and Gangetic West Bengal until Monday, and in Telangana and East Uttar Pradesh over the weekend, with a gradual abatement thereafter.

Warm nighttime conditions are likely to continue in isolated pockets over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh until Monday.
