Four get three-yr jail for killing elephant
Coimbatore: The fifth judicial magistrate court awarded three years imprisonment to four people on Friday for electrocuting a wild elephant in the district 13 years ago.
The forest department registered a case against T K John, 66, of Rathinapuri, A John Selvaraj, 51, S Rajenderan, 41 and P Christhudas, 32, of Chadivayal in Coimbatore, for electrocuting a male wild elephant near Elida Farm at Chadivayal, in Boluvampatti forest range, on October 28, 2010.
They had connected AC current to an electric fence around the farm. An elephant came in contact with the fence and was electrocuted.
The forest department registered a case against the four men under various sections of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. The court also slapped a 10,000 fine on them.
