BHUBANESWAR: The railways is planning not to run Rath Yatra special trains from Howrah or Shalimar to Puri as several trains on this route are either getting cancelled or diverted after the triple-train accident at Bahanaga Bazar in Balasore district on June 2.
"We are not running special trains from Howrah to Puri for Rath Yatra in view of the Bahanaga Bazar accident and its related works," said Aditya Kumar Chaudhary, chief public relations officer, South Eastern Railway (SER).
The railways is taking all precautions to run trains passing through Bahanaga Bazar train accident site. Even now, the trains are being allowed to run at a restricted speed while passing the accident site.
Many trains are getting delayed after the accident, sources said. Last year, several trains were running from Howrah and Shalimar to Puri and vice-versa. Among those were Shalimar-Puri-Shalimar Rath Yatra Special Express.
However, the railways will run more than 200 special trains between June 20 and June 30 for the Rath Yatra festival in Puri on other routes. These routes are the Visakhapatnam-Puri, Junagarh Road-Puri, Gunupur-Puri, Jagadalpur-Puri and Sambalpur-Puri. Some trains will run from Bhubaneswar and Khurda too.
