MUMBAI: The state government has received the preliminary inquiry report of the sexual assault and murder of an 18-year-old student at a hostel in south Mumbai and has decided to suspend the superintendent, said higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Patil on Friday. He also met the family of the deceased student and announced a financial aid of Rs 5 lakh to them.
Patil further said that women security guards will be provided after a thorough review of the security at all government-run hostels across the state.
Meanwhile, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad members took out a candle march to the girls' hotel to pay tribute to the teenager, who was from Akola and pursuing second year of diploma in computer engineering course in Mumbai.
"Although 10 days have passed since the incident...no action has been taken against the culprits. The investigation report of the incident has also not been published yet," said an ABVP member.
They demanded that hostels across the state be equipped with closed-circuit television cameras, appointment of women security guards and staff, and action against the culprits in the incident.
The security guard, Prakash Kanojia (35), suspected to have raped and murdered the teenager, ended his life by suicide minutes after committing the crime in the wee hours of May 6. Kanojia's body was found on the tracks near Charni Road railway station the same morning.
