GURGAON: Three men were arrested from Jaipur on Thursday for allegedly extorting Rs 50,000 from a male escort. While one of them impersonated a journalist, the other posed as a police officer who threatened to arrest him for cybercrime and illegal activities. The third one was the driver.
They have been identified as 29-year-old Mohit Kumar Tank, who posed as a journalist, and driver Sunil. Both belonged to Jaipur. Their third accomplice, Devkinandan (37), who posed as a cop, is a native of Madhya Pradesh, but he too stayed in Jaipur. Police said Mohit and Devkinandan were neighbours in Jaipur, while Mohit knew Sunil and roped him into the crime.
"On June 4, a man approached Jharsa police post and filed a complaint against three persons for threatening him and cheating him of Rs 50,000," said ACP (crime) Varun Kumar.
He told police that a few days ago, he received a call, and the caller asked him to meet a woman for male escort service. The caller also sent him a photo of a woman, after which the complainant agreed to meet them in Sector 39.
“When the victim reached the location, Mohit Kumar Tank introduced himself as a journalist and threatened him that he was involved in illegal activities, which come under cyber fraud. Then Mohit asked him to sit inside a Swift Dzire that was being driven by Sunil. He took them to a nearby police station, where Devkinandan was standing outside the police station in civil dress. He introduced himself as a senior police officer and threatened to arrest him for his illegal activities. Then he asked the victim to pay Rs 1 lakh in order to escape arrest. However, the complainant could only arrange Rs 50,000 from his brother’s bank account and gave it to them,” added the ACP.

They were booked under IPC sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 384 (extortion), 420 (cheating), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intention) at Sadar police station. Sunil was arrested on June 5. After he told police about two other aides, Mohit and Devkinandan were nabbed on June 15.
