Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in western India, causing widespread damage and prompting the evacuation of over 175,000 people. The cyclone knocked out power and resulted in shipping containers being thrown into the sea. While the storm has weakened as it moved towards Pakistan, it still caused significant destruction in India. The tourism in this wide part of this Indian state has been deeply affected.
In Pakistan, where the cyclone was expected to cause flash floods, people in coastal towns lined up to receive food donated by charities, aid agencies, and local authorities. Pakistan’s national disaster management agency reported that the cyclone was located 125 kilometers south-southwest of Keti Bandar, a port in the flood-hit Sindh province. The decision regarding the return of displaced people will be made on Saturday, as the storm is expected to weaken.
The cyclone, named Biparjoy, set a record for the longest lifespan over the Arabian Sea, lasting over 10 days. The Indian Meteorological Department compared it to Cyclone Kyarr in 2019, which lasted nine days. In response to the cyclone, the Gujarat government deployed rapid action squads to rescue wildlife and clear fallen trees in Gir National Park, known for its Asiatic lion population.
