Assam flood: Incessant rain continues to wreak havoc, affects 34,000 people

With rivers gushing near the danger mark in Assam, continuous heavy downpours added to the woes of the local people after it inundated new areas across 11 districts and impacted over 34,000 people.
Most of the rivers in the state, including the Brahmaputra, are flowing with high water levels at different places. Luckily, none are flowing above the danger mark, reported PTI based on the daily flood report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Till now, around 34,189 people are bearing the brunt of incessant rainfall and flooding in the state. Out of the total affected people, 14, 675 are women and 3,787 are children. On Thursday, the number of affected people increased from over 29,000 in three districts including Bishwanath, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri.
Lakhimpur is the worst hit with over 23,516 people suffering from the deluge. Another district hit most by the flood was Dibrugarh with 3,857, later Darrang and Bishwanath with 2231each, and Dhemaji with 1,085 people.
To help the flood victims, eleven relief distribution centers eight in Lakhimpur and two in Udalguri have been set up. The heavy flooding has devastated around 77 villages with 209.67 hectares of crop areas completely damaged across Assam, said ASDMA.
Flooding has breached four embankments, two each in Lakhimpur and Udalguri. Moreover, massive erosion from Bisawanath, Bongaigaon, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong West, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sonitpur, Tamulpur, and Udalguri districts, the ASDMA said.
Landslides have also been reported from some parts of the Dima Haso and Kamrup districts following heavy rainfall. Flood waters have damaged embankments, roads, bridges, and other infrastructure in Baksa, Biswanath, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Nalbari, and Udalguri districts.
