PremiumAt least 41 people, mostly students, were killed after militants linked to the Islamic State (IS) group stormed a school in western Uganda in the country's worst such attack in years. Over 60 students were being educated at the school. The militants killed the students and burnt down their dormitories. A food store was also looted during the incident, according to the reports.
The mayor of the Ugandan border has said that 41 bodies have so far been recovered from the Lhubiriha Secondary School in Mpondwe and 38 are those of the students. Major General Dick Olum from the Ugandan Army has told the reporters that some students were either burnt to death or hacked by the Islamic State militants. He added that some other girl students were abducted.
DNA tests will be conducted on the bodies that have not been identified due to the burns. According to the reports, the attackers torched the mattresses of the students.
All the bodies have been transferred to Bwera Hospital. Those with critical injuries have also been taken to the hospital. A number of students are still missing, the Resident Commissioner for Kasese, Joe Walusimbi, said.
"All of the dead so far are confirmed to be students at the school," he said.
