UP: 'Cyclonic thundershowers' may spell relief on Tuesday

LUCKNOW: The southwest monsoon is all set to miss its date with Uttar Pradesh, but thundershowers under the influence of cyclone Biparjoy, may bring some relief on Tuesday.
According to the state Met department, the cyclone that hit Gujarat on Wednesday weakend on Thursday and will slow down further in the coming days. Though weakening, it will gradually move to Rajasthan and cause rainfall in the state till Monday. Thereafter, the cloud mass will shift over UP and cause thundershowers in some parts of the state on Tuesday.
"There will be no change in the hot weather conditions in UP on Saturday. However, rain in Rajasthan will lessen the ferocity of the dry hot winds coming from that state towards UP from Sunday onward. As a result, mercury levels will gradually drop by a couple of degrees from Sunday onwards - first in west UP and then in the rest of the state," said Mohammad Danish, senior scientist at the state met department.
"While thundershowers are expected in many parts of the state on Tuesday, rain would be more in southern parts of the state bordering Rajasthan and adjoining central UP including Lucknow. Temperatures will drop by 4-5 degrees, bringing relief from the scorching heat prevailing for the past three weeks," he said.
Meanwhile, sweltering heat continued to sweep most parts of the state. Maximum temperatures were 2-4 degrees above normal. Prayagraj was hottest in the state with maximum temperature 44 degrees Celsius followed by Jhansi 43.7 degrees Celsius and Varanasi 43 degrees Celsius.
In Lucknow, maximum temperature was 40.6 degrees Celsius, 2.6 units above normal, and minimum temperature 29 degrees Celsius, 2 notches above normal. No significant change is expected on Saturday, but mercury levels would drop by a couple of degrees on Sunday.
