When police tried to take the driver with them, people protested and misbehaved with them
NEW DELHI: A pedestrian died after being hit by a bus in Bindapur on Tuesday. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested. Police said the bus was being driven rashly and at a high speed. A case has been registered, but the deceased has not been identified so far. Cops suspect he is a vagabond.
Investigators said local people and passersby held a protest and thrashed the driver after the incident. They also vandalised the bus.
Police said they received a PCR call on the incident at 10.37 pm on Tuesday. "The cluster scheme bus had hit and crushed the pedestrian, following which a crowd gathered at the spot near Nawada Metro Station and thrashed the bus driver. The bus was going to a depot in Najafgarh when the incident took place," an officer said.
"The PCR team reached the spot and when the cops tried to take the driver with them, people protested and misbehaved with them. They also pushed them. The mob soon became more violent and started pelting stones on the bus and damaged its window pane. Cops were somehow able to control the crowd and disperse them," the officer added.
Eyewitnesses claimed that some people were injured in the incident, however, cops denied it.
DCP (Dwarka) M Harsha Vardhan said they had lodged two cases. "The first case was registered under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC and the driver, Amit (29), was arrested. Another case was registered under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of IPC," he explained.

Police said they were making efforts to identify the deceased and also those found damaging the public property in this incident.
The Delhi Police's data shows that last year, cluster buses were involved in 21 fatal accidents, which killed 22 people and injured 95. The data further shows that a total of 504 pedestrians lost their lives while 1,536 were injured last year. In 2021, cluster buses were involved in 29 fatal accidents.
