New Delhi: India logged 106 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, pushing up total reported cases to more than 4.5 crore, the health ministry said in an update on Thursday. Active cases have dropped to 2,067 from 2,148 following a sharp decline over the past six weeks after a surge linked to the XBB.1.16 Omicron variant.
The virus has claimed an estimated 531,893 lives since its emergence in early 2020.
Health experts have noted a decrease in hospital admissions due to the declining number of cases. Despite this, elderly individuals and those with comorbid conditions remain at risk.
Vulnerable populations have been advised to take their booster shots and continue observing covid-19 protocols. Experts said the current virus variants are likely to be less severe due to widespread hybrid immunity, a result of both vaccination efforts and natural infections.
Over 44.46 million people have recovered from the disease so far, marking a recovery rate of 98.81%. About 186 people recovered in the past 24 hours.
The health ministry advised to the state governments to examine the situation of covid-19 at micro level--district and sub-districts--and maintain focus on implementation of necessary measures for prompt and effective management of covid-19 duly ensuring effective compliance.
The government has asked the states to follow the five-fold strategy, i.e., Test-Track Treat-Vaccination.
Around 81,475 tests were conducted in a day taking the total number of tests to 92.93 crore.
