MUMBAI: While the onset of monsoon over Mumbai is still to be declared, many areas in the city and its neighbourhood witnessed significant rains between Tuesday and Wednesday. Indian Meteorological Department officials have attributed the rainfall to the effects of the severe cyclone Biparjoy in the Arabian Sea while maintaining these spells are pre-monsoon showers.
"Conditions are becoming favourable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon over some more parts of the southern peninsula and eastern India and the adjoining areas between June 18 and 21," said IMD. It has forecast till June 17, there will be light rainfall in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar.
The Santacruz observatory recorded 6mm rain, Colaba 10mm, Thane 30mm and Dahanu 43mm. Weathermen said before the onset of monsoon can be declared, certain criteria need to be fulfilled, one being the wind direction which needs to be westerly to south-westerly.
