History of Southgate Street School, new CVG flight, today's top stories | Daily Briefing

Hi, I’m education reporter Madeline Mitchell.
Like most folks in the area, I’m a fan of Newport’s Hofbrauhaus. And like most folks in the area, I had no idea that a historic building shares a parking lot with the restaurant – until I started reporting on this story a few weeks ago.
Southgate Street School is full of Newport and African American history. While the school closed in 1955, some alumni that remain in the area are dedicated to keeping the building preserved and celebrated.
In today's story, you’ll learn about the history of this historically Black school and hear from alumni and current students at Northern Kentucky University who are helping elevate the school’s visibility in the community.

Before you go: Remember the solar eclipse of 2017?
If you were in Cincinnati on Aug. 21, 2017, you probably remember the world stopping while everyone stepped outside to witness a solar eclipse stealing the city's attention.
That wasn't even close to the showstopper that's coming next year.
During the solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, the path of totality (where the sun gets totally blocked by the moon) will slice oh-so-close to downtown Cincinnati and cover a huge swath of Ohio.
Experts say that eclipse could bring boatloads of out-of-state travelers and $100 million into the state's economy.
Learn more about what to expect and how to prepare right here. Oh, and it's already a good time to start wishing for clear skies.
