Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel held a review meeting at the State Emergency Operation Center in Gandhinagar on Thursday morning regarding Cyclone Biparjoy.
As per IMD reports, the Very Severe Cyclonic Storm, which is moving northeastward in the Arabian Sea, is predicted to cross and make landfall at the Jakhau Port in Kutch this evening.
The IMD issued a Red alert for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts on Wednesday, saying that VSCS (Very Severe Cyclonic Storm) Biparjoy will cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by Thursday evening.
Warnings about extensive damage to temporary housing structures and falling of trees and branches due to high-speed winds, high tides and heavy rainfall have been given by India Meteorological Department.

The statement released by the government said: “From the perspective of the safety and security of the various reporters, cameramen and other personnel of the various media organizations, especially the private TV channels, it is strongly advised that media organizations may undertake abundant precaution and due care in the matter of deployment of their personnel in the areas likely to be affected and follow the precautions being issued by local the administration. And under no circumstances take decisions for deployment of such personnel in a way which may compromise the safety and security of the media personnel.”
In a tweet in Hindi, Mumbai Police warned of high waves today. The IMD has predicted high tides in the coastal areas of Mumbai.
The tweet added: “Anticipating the cyclone, the Mumbai administration is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions for the safety of the residents. Avoid going to sea/coastal areas during cyclone warning.”

Dr. Mrityunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the IMD, has advised that sea conditions in the northeast Arabian Sea will continue to be turbulent today due to the presence of Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’. As a precautionary measure, all fishing operations are recommended to be suspended. Furthermore, offshore activities, port and industrial operations, as well as oil explorations, should be regulated and closely monitored throughout the day.

Amit Arora, collector Kachchh, Gujarat said that the cyclone is expected to make landfall between 4-5pm today.
Taking on preparedness, he added that 46,000 people have been evacuated and shifted to shelter homes. Six NDRF, 3 RPF teams, 2 SDRF teams and 8 columns of Army are on standby.
“More than 20,000 animals have been taken to safer places. Adequate amount of food ration available at all shelter homes. 50 teams ready for road clearance,” he added.

Cyclone Biparjoy is less than 200 kilometres from the Gujarat coast and its impending landfall on Thursday evening, along with the anticipated heavy rain and storm surge, have led to the evacuation of 74,000 people living in vulnerable areas, authorities have said. The administration has shifted people from nearly 120 villages located between zero and 10 km from the seashore in Kutch district.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Biparjoy is expected to make landfall near Jakhau port as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour.
Four Indian Navy ships with HADR bricks embarked are on standby at short notice. Five relief teams each at Porbandar and Okha and 15 relief teams at Valsura are on standby. Helos at INS Hansa in Goa and INS Shikra in Mumbai are also ready to leave for Gujarat, said the Indian Navy.
As of 5.30am on June 15, 2023, Cyclone Biporjoy, classified as a “Very Severe Cyclonic Storm” (VSCS), is located approximately 180km west-southwest of Jakhau Port in Gujarat, over the Northeast Arabian Sea.
It is expected to traverse across the regions of Saurashtra, Kutch, and the adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi, near Jakhau Port, by the evening of June 15.

Cyclone Biparjoy, a name given by Bangladesh and pronounced as ‘Biporjoy’ is set to make a landfall today (June 15) evening near Jakhau Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district. India Meteorological Department said that before hitting the port, the very severe cyclonic storm will cross Saurashtra and Kutch and the adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi.
On Thursday morning, visuals showed rough sea conditions in Gujarat’s Mandvi. Strong winds in the area were reported too. Several central ministers, including Amit Shah, Mansukh Mandaviya, Rajnath Singh and Nirmala Sitharaman, have been holding meetings to review preparedness for ‘Biporjoy’. Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel and his Rajasthan counterpart Ashok Gehlot too are keeping a close eye on the weather-related situation.
Trains in the western region have been hit too due to the inclement weather. So far 76 trains have been cancelled, 36 short-terminated and 31 short-originated. In addition, various safety and security precautions are being taken by the Western Railways for train passengers in areas under its jurisdiction.
The Gujarat administration has shifted more than 74,000 people living near the coast as a precaution and deployed disaster management units for rescue and relief measures.
With the cyclone in the Arabian Sea barrelling towards the Gujarat coast, parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, the Met department said, adding that that cyclone will hit with maximum sustained wind speeds of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kmph. This will be the second cyclone to hit the state in two years after ‘Tauktae’ in May 2021.
A few places in Porbandar, Rajkot, Morbi, Junagadh and remaining districts of Saurashtra and North Gujarat regions are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Thursday.
The IMD has also forecast light to moderate rainfall with heavy to extremely heavy showers at isolated places over north Gujarat districts and adjoining south Rajasthan on Friday.
Of the total 74,345 people moved to temporary shelters in eight coastal districts, nearly 34,300 were evacuated in Kutch district alone, followed by 10,000 in Jamnagar, 9,243 in Morbi, 6,089 in Rajkot, 5,035 in Devbhumi Dwarka, 4,604 in Junagadh, 3,469 in Porbandar district and 1,605 in Gir Somnath district, said a release by the Gujarat government.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Wednesday night reached the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar and held a meeting with top officials to review the situation and steps taken so far by the administration in view of the approaching cyclone, said the release.
Meanwhile, two most famous temples of Gujarat — Dwarkadhish Temple in Devbhumi Dwarka and Somnath Temple in Gir Somnath district — will remain closed on Thursday for devotees, said another release.
