Mumbai on Thursday reported four new COVID-19 cases which took its tally of infections to 11,63,894, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The death toll remained unchanged at 19,773 with zero new fatalities being reported. A day before, the city had recorded five new cases and zero fatalities. As many as 877 new COVID-19 tests were conducted in the city on Thursday. Eight patients recovered from the infection since previous evening. The city has 43 active COVID-19 cases now. (PTI)
AIMIM workers on Thursday tried to gift a new pair of shoes to former Aurangabad mayor Nandkumar Ghodele by way of protest. The administration earlier this week captured four stray dogs from the Nakshatrawadi area where Ghodele lives and sterilized them. The action was taken after a dog entered the premises of his residence and ran away with a shoe. AIMIM workers on Thursday tried to hand over a new pair of shoes at the Municipal Corporation office, stating that they wanted to gift it to Ghodele so that the administration can pay attention to the stray dog menace in other areas too. A fire broke out in a 11th floor flat in an upmarket building in south Mumbai's Cumballa Hill area on Thursday evening, though there was no report of anyone getting injured, an official said. The blaze in the flat in the 16-storey 'Breach Candy Apartment' on Bhulabhai Desai road started at 4:30pm and was put out by 7:20pm after four fire tending vehicles and personnel were deployed, he said. "The fire was confined to the electrical wiring, installation, household articles, beds, clothes etc. There is no report of anyone getting injured. The cause of the fire is being ascertained," the official informed. (PTI)

Hema and Bhambani were killed on December 11, 2015, and their bodies, stuffed in cardboard boxes, were thrown into a ditch in suburban Kandivali. While prime accused Vidyadhar Rajbhar has been absconding, Chintan was arrested on suspicion of having hatched the conspiracy to eliminate his estranged wife. He is now out on bail. He wanted to end the litigation that had arisen from the matrimonial dispute and hence decided to have Hema murdered, the police claimed. (PTI)
The Mumbai police have arrested two men for allegedly committing theft at the bungalow of Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty at Juhu in Mumbai after trespassing into the property, an official said on Thursday. A woman sub inspector of Navi Mumbai police was arrested for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a man whose father was booked in a case, a Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau official said on Thursday. The woman PSI attached to Uran police station had sought Rs 50,000 as bribe and she was held in a trap while accepting this amount late Wednesday night, Thane ACB deputy superintendent of police Ashwini Patil said. She has been charged under Prevention of Corruption Act and further probe is underway, he added. (PTI)
The Bombay high court on Thursday quashed a 2006 case lodged against singer Mika Singh for allegedly forcibly kissing actor Rakhi Sawant. A division bench of Justices AS Gadkari and SG Dige quashed the FIR and chargesheet filed in the case after taking into account an affidavit submitted by Sawant giving her consent on the ground that she and Singh had amicably resolved the issue. Former Maharashtra MLA Ashish Deshmukh will be joining the BJP here on June 18, a source close to him said on Thursday. Deshmukh, who was the BJP MLA from Katol in Nagpur district, had quit the saffron party and joined the Congress some years ago. Recently he was suspended from the Congress. He would be joining the BJP on Sunday in the presence of Union minister Nitin Gadkari, deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and state BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the source said. The Mumbai Police has arrested one more person in connection with the death threat calls to Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and his MLA brother Sunil Raut, an official said on Thursday. With this, the number people arrested in the case has risen to five, he said. The latest arrest was made after the police found the accused person's involvement, the official said. "The accused is also a political activist and has a close association with local leaders from the eastern suburbs of the city. His social media profile also shows his pictures and videos with MLA Sunil Raut," he added. He has been remanded in police custody till June 19. (PTI)

Mumbai police have detained two persons in connection with a theft at Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty's home here, an official said on Thursday. Some valuables were allegedly stolen from the actor's residence in Juhu last week, the official said.Based on a complaint, a theft case was registered at Juhu police station and a probe was initiated, he said.The probe team has detained two persons in this connection and their interrogation is on, the official added. Following a tragic incident that claimed the lives of four teenagers at Juhu beach on June 12 earlier this week the BMC has decided to propose appointing 120 trained security guards in two shifts.The city, known for its six popular beachfronts, will have 60 trained security guards on duty from 8 am to 4 pm, and an additional 60 guards from 3 pm to 11 pm. Their primary objective will be to prevent citizens and tourists from entering deep into the sea waters and to mitigate drowning incidents during rough sea conditions.

Tomato prices scale to Rs 60/kg in retail markets in Mumbai
Following a brief period of normality, tomato prices have doubled to Rs 50-60 per kg in retail markets over Rs 30 last week.
