Centre hands over SI Junmoni Rabha death case to CBI
Guwahati: The central government on Wednesday assigned the investigation of the case of Assam Police sub-inspector Junmoni Rabha’s death under mysterious circumstances in Nagaon district last month to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The development has come after Assam DGP GP Singh on Monday visited the CBI headquarters in New Delhi regarding the transfer of the Junmoni Rabha death case to the central investigating agency.
Singh on Wednesday said, “The department of personnel and training has issued a notification assigning the investigation of the case to the central agency. A CBI team will register the case and reach Assam by tomorrow and will begin their investigation.”
Junmoni (30), who was posted as a sub-inspector at Morikalang police outpost in Nagaon district, was found dead under mysterious circumstances with injury marks in her body inside her private vehicle.
The car was found completely damaged by the police on National Highway 37 at Jakhalabandha in the district, which is 55 km east from Nagaon town, around 1.45 am on May 16.
It was initially believed that her vehicle collided with the container truck coming from the opposite direction. The truck was also found by the police on the spot.
The case was initially transferred to the CID by DGP Singh. However, Assam Police on May 20 recommended to the state government to hand over the case to the CBI for maintaining neutrality in the probe.

The decision was taken after considering public demand and since the case involves the death of a police officer. Following this, the state government had written to the CBI for an investigation into the case.
It is pertinent to mention that during the investigation by the CID of Assam Police, illegal business of fake Indian currency notes (FICN) and fake gold emerged as a link to Junmoni’s death as she was investigating a case against racketeers of FICN and fake gold before her death.
The family members of Junmoni, various organisations of Rabha community and political parties had raised the demand for a CBI probe as they smelled foul play in her death.
