Surviving the storm: How to stay safe as 'very severe' Cyclone Biparjoy approaches
Cyclone Biparjoy is predicted to make a fierce landfall close to Gujarat's Jakhau
NEW DELHI: Between 4pm and 8 pm today, Cyclone Biparjoy is predicted to make a fierce landfall close to Gujarat's fishing port Jakhau, packing winds of 125–135 kmph gusting up to 150 kmph in the coastal regions.
As the 'very severe' cyclone approaches your location, the following are the things you should and shouldn't do as an early action is essential if a cyclone alert is in effect:
  • Be on the lookout for Cyclone Biparjoy alerts and get your protection measures ready before the cyclone.
  • Believe in the official information. Ignore rumours. For updates or fresh instructions, check the internet or radio.
  • Unplug appliances and turn off the gas, the water and the electricity.
  • The strongest part of the house, such as a stairwell, bathroom or corridor, should be used as a hiding place instead of doors and windows.
  • Board up glass windows or put storm shutters in place.
  • Provide strong suitable support for outside doors.
  • Keep a watch out for the cyclone Biparjoy's eye; while it could momentarily slow down the wind, it does not mean the storm is over.
  • When your area is under cyclone warning get away from low-lying beaches or other low-lying areas close to the coast.
  • Leave early before your way to high ground or shelter gets flooded.
  • Get extra food, which can be eaten without cooking. Store extra drinking water in suitably covered vessels.
  • Keep some dry non-perishable food always ready for use in emergency.
  • Make provision for children and adults requiring special diet.
  • If an immediate evacuation is required, fuel up your car.
  • To retain any shattered glass in place, make sure the window shutters are closed or use packing tape.
  • If you are caught in the car during the cyclone, pull over in a spot clear of water courses, trees and power lines, and remain in the vehicle.
