NEW DELHI: A Delhi court, while hearing the case of a man who was treated by a quack for five months in 2013 and became disabled, directed the Centre and Delhi government to make a “proper verification mechanism” and take action against the quack. The quack was impersonating a doctor who had died seven years ago.
The court of Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) judge Ekta Gauba Mann requested the chief metropolitan magistrate (CMM) to direct the station house officer (SHO) of Prashant Vihar to verify and take action against the quack, who wrongly treated Deepak Kumar and created fake bills.
Stating that these quacks were wrongly treating patients/accident victims and playing with the life of public at large, the court — in the judgment dated June 9, 2023 — remarked, “This is a most dangerous act. It requires to be dealt with by an iron hand as the quack is playing with the life of accident victims, which could be saved during the first golden hours if proper medical treatment is provided.”
The court also asked for compliance report by Delhi government and Centre to be filed on next date of hearing on July 9.
The court awarded a compensation of Rs 31,71,000, which included 74 months and 25 days of interest at the rate of 9% per annum from the date of filing the petition till the date of the award passed in favour of the petitioner. The court also directed the insurance company to pay the amount to Kumar within 30 days from the day of the judgment.
