Nagpur: Nearly a week after Nagpur University decided to implement
the National Education Policy (NEP)-2020 from the new academic session (2023-24), it has taken a u-turn taking the city academic circles by surprise.
On Tuesday, the university issued a statement that the university would not be going ahead with its plans to implement NEP from the current academic year for the undergraduate courses. The administration has also issued a statement in this regard on its website. There was no information on NEP for postgraduate courses.
Quoting registrar Raju Hiwase, the statement cited “technical reasons” for the decision. “NU had made complete preparations to implement the NEP from first year courses. All the affiliated colleges too were instructed in this regard from time to time. Due to some technical reasons, NEP will not be applicable to the first-year degree UG course in university affiliated colleges (excluding autonomous colleges) from this session, as per vice chancellor Subhash Chaudhari’s directives,” it said.
Registrar Raju Hiwase did not take TOI’s calls. However, NU officials said the decision was taken following the directives from the
Maharashtra government. “Higher and technical education minister Chandrakant Dada Patil had recently convened a meeting on the NEP implementation. It was decided in the meeting to defer the implementation till the next academic session (2024-25), probably due to lack of preparations.”
There was a lot of confusion among the colleges and students about the NEP, and NU’s U-turn would make it difficult for them, as per some teachers. “The NU top brass sat on the government resolution of April 20 for NEP’s implementation for over one and half months before suddenly imposing the decision on us, just two weeks before the start of the new session. In just six days, they withdrew their decision without quoting any concrete reason. We need to answer the students and parents on such developments,” they said.
