While AR and VR devices have been around for well over a decade, the segment got a massive push after Apple unveiled its first mixed-reality headset, the Vision Pro, a few days ago. In anticipation of more AR/VR headsets launching in the future, Samsung is reportedly launching new sensors for such devices.

Samsung could unveil new 3D ToF sensors this week

According to tipster @Tech_Reve, Samsung will unveil new 3D ToF sensors at the VLSI Symposium 2023 event this week. One of the sensors is said to feature an on-chip ISP (Image Signal Processor) and has a 2-stack process technology. The sensor reportedly has a 65nm BSI (Back Side Illumination) layer and a 28nm CMOS area. The 3D ToF sensor is rumored to be able to measure distances of up to 5 meters at a frame rate of 60fps.

It is reportedly a low-power chip, and its power consumption is as low as 188mW. If this information is correct, it could certainly be used in modern AR/VR headsets. Such devices could use multiple such sensors to measure nearby areas, objects, and hand gestures to operate AR/VR headsets.

Samsung Electronics’ System LSI arm is likely to develop this sensor. This arm already makes APs (Application Processors) for mobile devices, 5G cellular modems, and ISOCELL camera sensors for phones and smart cars. Whether or not its upcoming 3D ToF sensor is used in Samsung’s upcoming XR headset remains to be seen.
