Ooty court finally gets a toilet for women lawyers
Udhagamandalam: The Supreme Court’s intervention has paved the way for the allotment of a waiting room and a toilet exclusively for women lawyers at the newly built district combined court complex in Ooty.
The new court complex was built at a cost of Rs 39 crore and inaugurated last year. It has all the basic facilities but lacks a toilet for women layers.
After a long struggle, the Women Lawyers Association of Nilgiris (WLAN) approached the Supreme Court. On March 28, Chief Justice of India C Y Chandrachud directed the court to allot a room and a toilet exclusively for women lawyers. Subsequently, the women were allocated two rooms with three tiny toilet cubicles. But in a couple of days, they were turned into storerooms.
After an online media and TOI reported the issue, the Supreme Court took cognisance of the lack of infrastructure facilities, including a toilet for women lawyers, in the new combined court complex. The SC directed the district judge to allot proper rooms and toilets for women lawyers.
Subsequently, Nilgiris district judge A Abdul Khadar allotted two rooms and a toilet for the exclusive use of women lawyers.
Aruna Mohsin Sait, a member of WLAN said, “We are happy that two rooms and a toilet were allotted to the women lawyers here. Keys to the rooms were handed over to us. We have asked for one more room given the number of women lawyers here.”
She said, “We are greatly thankful to the Chief Justice of India for his intervention.”
