BMC to depute 129 trained security guards at popular Mumbai beaches

The Mumbai civic body on Wednesday said it has decided to depute 120 trained security guards at popular beaches and seafronts, a move that comes days after three boys drowned in the Arabian Sea off the city coast. RTI activist seeking demolition of illegal market detained after self-immolation threat

The Mumbai police on Wednesday detained a 48-year-old RTI activist after he threatened to immolate himself outside the BMC's ward office in Kurla demanding demolition of a market, which was allegedly constructed illegally by the brother of a prominent politician, an official said. The activist, Vinod Sonkamble, was detained in the afternoon after he reached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) L-ward office, during which the police recovered a petrol-filled bottle from him, he said.

Maharashtra govt to set up six 'Shiv Srushti' theme parks in state to highlight life of Shivaji Maharaj

Cordelia bribery case: Mumbai court refuses to grant pre-arrest bail to accused Sam D'Souza

A special CBI court here on Wednesday rejected the anticipatory bail application of Sanville alias Sam D'Souza, an accused in a bribery case related to the 2021 drug bust on Cordelia cruise ship, observing his custodial interrogation is necessary considering the gravity of the offence against him. Former Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Mumbai zonal director Sameer Wankhede is the main accused in the bribery case, which pertains to allegedly seeking Rs 25 crore as a bribe from Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan for not implicating his son Aryan in the drug bust case. D'Souza's anticipatory bail plea was rejected by special CBI judge S M Menjonge.

Man transporting cattle lynched by ‘gau rakshaks'; six held

A 23-year-old man transporting cattle was lynched allegedly by a group of ‘gau rakshaks' (cow vigilantes) in Maharashtra's Nashik district following which six persons have been arrested, police said on Wednesday. The alleged crime came to light on June 10 when Lukman Ansari's body was recovered from a gorge at Ghatandevi in Igatpuri area, an official said.

Mumbai: BMC plans to build an ambitious elevated corridor over the congested Western Express Highway. “Tenders will be floated only after preparation of a detailed project report and approval of the government. The project is likely to take four years for completion,” said additional municipal commissioner (Projects) P Velrasu. The DPR is expected to be prepared in the next five to six months.The project will increase the number of lanes on both carriageways to 14 or 16, including lanes underneath. The building of underpasses is to ensure that vehicles moving from arterial roads onto the highway do not impede movement of vehicles on various lanes. Underpasses will come up at junctions including Kala Nagar, JVLR and Aarey.

Signal system snag derails WR punctuality for 6 hours

A total of 90 trains were cancelled and at least 210 services were delayed on a chaotic day on Western Railway (WR) after a cable failure led to a snag in the signalling system near Malad station for almost 6 hours on Tuesday afternoon. Incidentally, this is the fifth signal failure on WR in the month of June.

WR had to deploy a manpower of more than 50 people to repair the fault which led to the collapse of the entire cable network from the afternoon till the onset of the evening peak hours.

Chopped body in flat: Statements of 20 persons recorded so far, say police

The Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar police in Maharashtra have recorded the statements of more than 20 persons in connection with the sensational discovery of the chopped, pressure-cooked and roasted body parts of a 32-year-old woman from a flat on the outskirts of Mumbai. Victim Saraswati Vaidya's live-in partner Manoj Sane (56) has been arrested for allegedly killing her and dismembering the body in their 7th-floor rented apartment in Mira Road of Thane district.

Sane has been remanded in police custody till June 16.According to Jayant Bajbale, deputy commissioner of police - Zone I, the process of recovery of materials in the case is underway. They have recorded the statements of 20 persons so far, he said.

Man booked for attempting to lure youngster to convert

An offence has been registered against a man for allegedly attempting to convert a youngster from Maharashtra's Palghar district after getting in touch with him on social media, police said on Tuesday. Based on a complaint lodged by the man's father, the police have registered an offence against the accused, who is a resident of Mumbra in neighbouring Thane district, and he will be arrested soon, senior inspector Sampatrao Patil of Manickpur police station said.

Mumbai: Underground waste bins for BMC hospitals

BMC has planned to install underground waste bins in hospital premises, aiming to facilitate convenient waste disposal. In the initial phase, a total of 15 underground waste bins will be set up in four civic hospitals namely KEM, Sion Hospital, Kasturba Hospital, and TB hospital at Sewri. Deputy commissioner (solid waste management) Chanda Jadhav stated that the ground Penetrating Radar Survey (GPRS) has already been conducted for this purpose.

Maharashtra cabinet okays 4 more family courts for Pune

Maharashtra cabinet has approved the setting up of four additional family courts in Pune. Fifty four posts will be created for the purpose. According to a government press release, at present there are five family courts functioning in Pune and there are 9,065 cases are pending with these courts. With the inclusion of 34 new villages in the Pune Municipal Corporation, there has been an annual increase of 2,520 cases filed in the court.

Maharashtra: 16 rehab centres for cured mental illness patients

The state cabinet on Tuesday approved the establishment of 16 rehabilitation homes for persons cured of mental illness and whose families refuse to take them back. These homes will be set up through NGOs in four districts. There will be separate rehabilitation homes one each for men and women in the age group of 18 to 55 and for seniors above 55 years of age. The cabinet approved Rs 5.76 lakh for the purpose of these homes.

Car carrying swords, knives stopped after chase near Taj hotel in Mumbai, 3 held

A security scare was created after an alert traffic constable found a car moving suspiciously near Taj hotel with tinted glasses. The cop signalled the car to stop but the person driving the car instead of stopping it accelerated and sped away.



The cop chased the car on his bike and waylaid him near Radio Club and also alerted Colaba police who also joined them in the chase and overpowered three occupants of the car near the dead end at Mukesh Mill Compound. The cops to their shock found the car equipped with swords, button knives, iron rods and other sharp objects.

Strong winds, rain bring much-needed respite to Mumbai

For yet another day on Tuesday, the city witnessed strong winds, and by evening, this was coupled with a sudden burst of rain in some areas, which brought down day temperatures significantly from 38.5 degrees that was recorded over the weekend. However, day temperatures continued to stay above normal.
